Palimpsests and Other Ghosts
Where landscape painting has historically assumed a stationary observer, contemporary viewing more often takes place in motion, with the world sliding past the window of a car, train, or airplane. This body of work is based on digital video shot from moving vehicles. From these clips, I selected and extracted video stills, often sequences of consecutive frames, and translated them into paint. Shot at low frame rates, the footage produces blurred, painterly images in which trees dissolve or snap into relief and forms hover between recognition and abstraction. The work sits between perception and recognition, motion and stillness, and between the thinnest fraction of a second captured on video and the slow, dense material time of painting.
