On the Way

These paintings began along the Camino Frances, on a stretch where a logging road cuts through the forest. Its width reminded me of my Toronto gallery, and with that in mind—and tongue firmly in cheek—I photographed three pairs of facing views in black and white to catch the hard Spanish light. The suite, Paseo I–VI, grew from those images, joined later by larger canvases drawn from the trees and undergrowth I encountered along the walk.
