Rocks, Water, Trees

Rocks, Water, Trees was developed during a residency at the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland. The exhibition brings together eight large canvases painted alongside an almost daily practice of plein air sketching on small panels. The quick outdoor studies, often completed in under an hour, contrast with the larger works that evolved over months through layers of photography, collage, digital drawing, and references to painting’s history.

These paintings build on my earlier constructed landscapes but are more directly tied to where I found myself in Newfoundland. There I recognized the same Atlantic light and atmosphere that shaped artists I adore: Lois Dodd, Milton Avery, Charles Burchfield, Marsden Hartley and Neil Welliver among others. Their work has so informed how I see, and in this landscape those connections were never more clear.
